April showers bring…

More time for writing, maybe?

The weather is warming up, the plants are coming back, and I can’t say goodbye fast enough to the terrible weather of winter. Hallelujah.

Now, on to the actual writing update. I’m very happy to say that I have officially finished chapter 4! I’m currently sitting at just over 19,500 words total, so I wrote a little more than 4,000 words this month. Much better than last month! Plus, I did hit my goal of finally finishing another chapter.

I have to say, I hope this book isn’t too overwhelmingly depressing right off the bat. I’ve mentioned in past posts that the first little bit of the book, particularly chapters 3 and 4, are less fast paced than the back half of book 1. While book 1 started out a little slower, I feel like there was a building tension that hooked people in and encouraged them to keep going to find out what happens next. While there is still some tension at the start of book 2, it’s more about reflection on what happened at the end of book 1. Di finally has a chance to slow down a bit after the insanity she experienced, and she has a lot to process. (You can find out just how much she has to process by reading book 1, found here. Wink wink.) I think it makes sense for the character, but I have a feeling I’m going to have to tweak some things in future revisions.

Anyway, like I said, I felt like I was able to get a bit more of a flow going in the few writing sessions I squeezed in between work things, home things, and trying to sleep. My goal is to keep that flow going. For book 2, chapters 2 and 3 were both just over 5,000 words each, and chapter 4 was actually closer to 5,300 words. If that pattern holds up, It seems somewhat reasonable that I can aim to write all of chapter 5 in April, that being around 5,000 words total. So that’s my goal. Write roughly 5,000 words and optimistically finish chapter 5. I’ve got to get some progress done anyway if I have any shot of completing the first draft by the end of the year. There are 15 total chapters planned at the moment!

Until next time!
